These are a few of the things FHU players have been doing:

British Horn Society at Glasgow

The annual BHS gathering moves around the country, and the 2017 meeting was at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire in Glasgow. FHU was there.
A regular feature of the sessions is the ‘Big Blow’ – and here’s some of the FHU group (the All Blacks at the front) giving plenty of air to Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus as arranged for French horns:

It was also a chance to get to know our new patron, Michael Thompson. Michael had no horn on hand for this session, so he sidled up to one of the trade displays and borrowed a pocket horn for demo purposes.

Music for the East Neuk Festival

by John Luther Adams

The internationally renowned composer John Luther Adams wrote his piece Across the Distance for French horns at the East Neuk Festival. It was first performed out of doors in the walled gardens at Cambo on a lovely, slightly misty evening, to an entranced audience. The performers were a group of some two dozen horn players both professional and amateur, including several from FHU, and led by Alec Frank Gemell of the SCO.  Here (above) they are rehearsing.

Svend Brown, Director of the East Neuk Festival, said afterwards, “We could not have done this without Fife Horn Union.”

The performance was reviewed in the UK national press and the piece went on to be performed on the South Bank in London. Here (below) is one of the FHU group playing at Cambo.

Candlebird was a creative composition/performance project organised by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, based on the music of Martin Suckling. Over two days, a group of kids and professionals devised, recorded and filmed a substantial new piece of music. The film is available on YouTube (search “SCO Candlebird”).  Several FHU members brought their horns (below) –
